Minutes of 9/14/2018 Board Meeting; Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Homeless Services

The Board of Directors met yesterday. Click to review Minutes from the September 14, 2018 Board meeting.

A key topic of the Board meeting was the recently-completed CoC report on Race-Ethnic Disparities in Homeless Services. This analysis begins by noting that homelessness disproportionately impacts people of color, and that this impact is not explained by higher poverty rates–especially for African-Americans.  The report then looks at outcomes within our homeless system, exploring whether there are disparities based on race and ethnicity. Click on the report title above for more information.

  2. There is also a recent mortality study published that found that unsheltered white males were at the highest risk of death, as compared to African Americans or Latinx, or women. There are some stipulated thoughts on cultural differences that may account for this. We think that we know from past grants and our own experiences that Latinx subgroup of homeless is less likely to end up long-term on the streets and more likely to couch surf or more apt to be welcomed in with other folks from their community. So the white male subpopulation may be the most disaffiliated from supports once they end up on the streets…. maybe, and of course with many individual exceptions.

So I wonder what the demographics are for the long-term sleeping rough subgroup?

    Thanks, Jay
